That moment when you see New Look by Simplicity is having a Labor Day sale with all patterns for $1…you grab ALL THE PATTERNS!!! Lol – ok, so maybe I only picked up like 5. But I am super excited about the ones I purchased. I immediately ordered the buttery Art Gallery knit fabric that I have been loving lately with the New Look Pattern 6525 in mind.
I love this dress pattern.
It comes with 5 different variations, all perfect for Fall. I will probably make 2 dresses, in 2 different styles, before the week is out. This drop waist dress with exposed ruffle seam, is loose around the body and has great swing. It is super comfortable, and has fantastic fitting sleeves. The neck is somewhere in between a turtleneck and a cowl – not quite loose enough for a big drape, but not tight and constricting like turtlenecks can be. Once I had the paper pattern pieces taped together, and the pattern cut out, making this dress was as easy as 1-2-3.

THOUGHTS ON PATTERN:
As mentioned previously, I was lucky enough to get this pattern for $1. So it was a total score. I bought the PDF version, and I will say I think Simplicity has some kinks to work out of their PDF pattern system as of now. I had to download a whole new program on my computer just to print the pattern – which I hate as I value my computer. If I had known that prior to purchasing, I honestly would not have bought them. I couldn’t even get the program to work, and had to call in my technical husband to get it loaded properly (which is saying something because I am pretty good at computers.). Secondly, the size chart that came with my pattern instructions was wrong – it was for a baby pattern. Thirdly, when I saved the instructions on my computer – so that I could print out the pattern and simply view the instructions at my leisure – the instructions would not show properly – cutting off the left and right hand side. I needed to be IN their system, logged on – AND using their computer extension for my pattern instructions to work. NOT A FAN of that little tidbit at all. Like I said, I value my computer – and hesitate to put any new programs on it. That being said, I would not order PDF patterns from Simplicity because of this alone. No computer bug is worth a $1 pattern. I couldn’t complain too much about all of the faulty instructions though because I did only pay $1 for the pattern on sale – but if I had paid full price and got what I received – I would have been fuming.
Moving past technical difficulties…
The pattern itself is great! I highly recommend buying the paper version from your local fabric store. It fits great, and is super easy to sew. A fantastic beginner pattern, perfect for the right knit fabric. The Art Gallery fabric I used is my new fave – it has the perfect weight to it (is not see through), is super soft, yet is not so stretchy that it gets wonky if you aren’t careful. SO worth the money!!! Love, love, love, love, love this fabric.
As for pattern alterations or modifications, I did have to take a few inches off the ruffle skirt, as the dress body length was too long for my short self. Next time I will remove length from the dress body and keep the ruffle full length. I want to make View C, and already have the knit fabric cut out. Just a matter of finding the time to sew! Woot woot. The neckline is AWESOME. I was seriously worried about the turtleneck aspect, that it might be too tight. But it was absolutely perfect. Not quite drapey enough to call a cowl in my opinion, its somewhere in between. I love it. I am not kidding when I say that the hardest part was taping together the paper pattern pieces. (BTW – I loved that they labeled each and every piece of paper with a line and column, leaving me knowing EXACTLY where every paper piece went without having to reference a pattern map). Once the pattern was assembled and cut out, this dress took me about 1 – 2 hours to sew. So so easy.
Altogether I love this pattern. I kind of feel bad for dogging their PDF pattern system – but in the spirit of not leading you astray, it had to be said. Hopefully they will fix these issues. The pattern itself is great, and absolutely PERFECT FOR FALL!!! I cannot wait to wear this dress by itself, with ankle boots, with a vest or cardi, with my army jacket – gah – it is going to look awesome all season long.
Did you see my little photo bomber? He has been sticking by my side a lot the past week or so. I think all of this tropical weather and storms are getting to him. My poor baby…
Thanks so much for stopping by, and until next time…
Happy sewing.
