When you can’t sew…craft!
We are going on Day 5 of the after math of Snowzilla here in Virginia Beach, which has left us rather homebound. What’s a girl to do when she has mass amounts of sewing projects and deadlines due, but cannot seem to make it to the local fabric store to buy her supplies? Craft of course! Lol
In between playing outside with the kids, making brownies and hot cocoa, and Pinteresting ‘Winter kids craft’ activities like it is my j-o-b, I decided to spend some time in my studio. With the kids home from school, I have limited amount of time to sit down and lose myself in front of the sewing machine. So I decided to come up with a quick textile craft that would satisfy my inner need to create, and would make me happy to look at with Valentine’s Day around the corner.
Wrap Around Leather Heart Ring
Free pattern for kids and adults
How to make an easy leather heart ring
*Easy Valentine’s Day jewelry craft
Time needed: 10-15 minutes, skill level: Beginner
MATERIALS:
- Scrap leather
- Pattern (see below)
- Heavy duty scissors
- Pen
- Printer
PATTERN:
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Print out pattern above, and cut out size desired from paper. Make sure your paper is set to ‘no scaling’ prior to cutting.
- Place pattern on top of leather, and use a pen to trace around the outer edge of the paper pattern directly onto the leather. (If you are unsure of your cutting skills, you may wish to do this onto the WRONG side of the leather to ensure pen marks do not show.)
- Cut out design, cutting directly onto your pen marks.
- Fold your heart in half, and cut 2 slits into the leather heart where indicated on the pattern.
- Wrap the arrow end of the ring around the back, and make a loop to the other side of the heart. Insert the arrow in the first slit, from the top to the bottom. You will need to gently pull the tip through, as the arrow will be larger than the cut slit. Pull the arrow back up through the other slit, so that it is on top of the heart again.
And you are finished!
*Please note, leathers come in different weights. Some of the heavier leather scraps will be too difficult to work through the slit in the heart. For cases like these, simply use a dab of hot glue or E6000 to adhere arrow in place on top of heart.
The leather seen in these photos that were able to easily work through the slits was approximately 2 – 2.5oz. The gold leather was 3 – 3.5oz and I was unable to work the arrow through the slits.
