Looking for a quick, last minute craft this Fourth of July weekend? (I know, I know – probably not – lol, we’re all busy up to our eyeballs!!! ha!) But imagine the fun your kids will have running around with flashlights on their arms this Fourth of July, camping, or on any regular Summer family fun night. This quick craft project takes about 10 minutes to make, using products you probably already have on hand. You don’t need to be an expert seamstress to make this kids craft – and the return on investment is DEFINITELY worth it! Just ask my son, who was nothing but smiles and hugs when I handed him his new toy :).
By the way, the second the flashlights come out do your kids:
- Fight over who gets to hold the flashlight
- Immediately flash it in someone’s eyes
- Play lightsaber swords with them
- Go on a treasure hunt
Or ALL OF THE ABOVE?!! Lol
Thank goodness for dollar store flashlights :).
Flashlight Armband DIY
Skill level: Novice
Time needed: 10 – 15 minutes
MATERIALS:
- Scrap of knit fabric
- (2) 3″ pieces of 1″ elastic
- Basic sewing essentials
HOW TO MAKE A FLASHLIGHT ARMBAND:
Step One – Cut a piece of fabric 7″ wide by 14″ long. (Dimensions of my 5 year old son’s lower arm cicumference, you may want to measure around your child’s arm for proper width x length.) Make sure the stretch of the fabric is going in the width direction.
Step Two – Fold the fabric in half, so that the shorts ends are meeting up. Measure 1″ from the folded edge to the outer edge, on either side. Cut a triangle out of the sides of the fabric on both sides. This will give you a center of 7″ wide, tapering to 5″ wide on either side. (5″ was my son’s wrist circumference.)
Step Three – Fold elastic in half, matching up the edges to create a loop. Pin loop edges in place along one raw edge of the bottom of your wrist band. Repeat for other loop, approximately 2″ away from your first loop. Baste stitch to secure.
Step Four – Fold armband in half, right sides together, matching up the outer edge. Pin in place and sew.
Step Five – Fold armband in half, wrong sides together, slipping one edge of the armband inside of the other and meeting up the raw edges. Fold raw edges 1/2″ towards the wrong side (the side without the elastic loops), and press. Fold again 1/2″ towards wrong side and press again, to fully enclose edge. Pin and sew around, using a zig zag stitch.
Slip flashlight inside of elastic loops, and you are finished!
Thanks so much for stopping by, and until next time…
Happy sewing!
My kids would love this!
Wow what an idea! I’m heading for camping soon, hopefully I’ll be able to make and use flashlight armband.
I need to make one of these for myself! It’ll be great to have a free hand when walking the dog at night.
I love the superheroes armband! Would definitely make one for my son and his friends now. Looks like a fun project.
Thank you for the cool idea!
