The peplum tankini is a sewing project I have had on my mind all Winter long. After sewing the high waist bikini bottoms last Summer, I wanted to make more tops to mix and match with. As a mother of three young children, I need tops that I can feel comfortable splashing around and playing in. A top that the kids can hold onto when needed, and I don’t need to worry about an accidental peep show. After all, what is life if you aren’t in the water playing WITH your kids?!! (So long as the water temp is above 85 degrees mind you!! Lol).
And boy do we ever swim, every day, all day, all Summer long.

How to sew a peplum tankini:
This is an alteration of the Sports bra pattern and DIY, and we will refer to that post for finishing.
Step One – Print and cut out sports bra pattern found here. Sew the side seams and shoulder seams as instructed in the sports bra pattern DIY post. Fold a piece of swimwear fabric in half, and then in half again, creating a 4-fold corner point (as you would for cutting a circle skirt). Fold your sports bra in half, and curve the bottom edge, laying it on top of the pointed 4-fold corner. Cut around the bottom, creating the circle center. Measure an additional 5 – 6″ down from your cut line, and cut an arc around. This will create a sort of donut shape, making the peplum for the bottom of your peplum tankini.
Step Two – Slip the peplum middle circle right sides together with the bottom exterior sports bra. Pin around. Now slip the lining sports bra right sides together with the exterior sports bra, sandwiching the peplum in the middle. Make sure to match up the side seams of your sports bra when pinning. Sew around using a small zigzag stitch to secure.
Step Three – Turn sports bra right side out. Continue sewing the peplum tanking together as the Sports Bra DIY indicates from Step 4 on.
