I love making goals. They give me a drive and something to focus on, they help me reach and try new things, and stretch me beyond my comfort zone. But what happens when you meet those goals? Sure, you rejoice and are happy. But with that success comes a hole – a place that used to motivate you now seems stagnant.
I like to believe that life isn’t about just reaching one goal, but rather a succession of goals being made and achieved. Obviously not every goal we set is reached, and sometimes along the way we need to pivot and new courses are set. But life without goals? Life without dreams can feel rather empty.
The problem I was having as the New Year rolled around, I didn’t know what my goals were for 2016. I didn’t have a dream anymore, or something specific I was working towards. And that was a problem for me. I stumbled around trying to figure out what I wanted 2016 to hold for me, what I was believing for, and then I heard this:
The Best is Yet to Come.
For some of you this is just a saying. For me, it was a rallying call.

So as I look towards 2016 with renewed optimism, knowing that God has good things in store for me, I can remind myself that the best is yet to come. And this holds true no matter what stage of life you are in.
For some of you that is empty nest syndrome, and you cannot imagine a life in which your kids are not in your home. Guess what? Those kids – they have grandbabies…and from what I hear it is even BETTER than having your own kids :). The best is yet to come! For others, you may be going through an extremely hard time in your life, like we were with the death of a loved one just before the holiday season. You cannot imagine life without them. Guess what? You can’t see it now, or even imagine it, but the best is still yet to come! Keep your head up and know that you are loved beyond measure. Or perhaps you are stuck in newborn insomnia, and haven’t slept in months and are zombiing around with spit up down your back. It gets better, so so much better. Just you wait.
The best is yet to come.
So believe for more this year. More than you initially even thought possible, dream BIGGER and reach HIGHER.
My personal goals you ask?
- Stronger marriage
- Being a better parent to my kids, with control over my yelling when things get stressful
- Closer connections with friends in my local community, and within the church
- Workshop space in Virginia Beach
- Increased traffic on the blog / revenue for my work
- Witty / creative ideas to share
- New doors to be opened for working with companies / brands in different ways
And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Tell me, what are some of your goals for the year?
