Often I find myself needing an extra pocket for my phone, credit cards, or even keys. Especially when I don’t feel like carrying around my bulky purse. Any vest, jacket, or accessory that has zippered pockets and I am sold. So when I recently went to the ‘adventure park’ here in Virginia Beach, and found myself without a proper pocket to hold my accessories…I came up with the pocket scarf. Because sometimes the back jean pocket just won’t do.
(And quite frankly…who here thinks ‘square butt’ is attractive??? Just saying.)
The pocket scarf is perfect for holding your phone, a hot / cold pack, credit cards, or even a light pair of keys! Great for keeping your necessities safe, when you don’t want to carry a lot with you.
How to make a pocket scarf.
POCKET SCARF DIY
- Skill level: Advanced beginner (zipper)
- Time needed: 1 hour
MATERIALS:
- (1) 11″L x 62″W exterior fabric
- (1) 11″L x 62″W lining fabric
- (1) 7-9″ zipper
- Basic sewing essentials
HOW TO SEW A POCKET SCARF:
Step One –
Cut your fabric to the specifications listed. Feel free to make the scarf longer / shorter -or- thinner / thicker based on your desired finished scarf size.
Step Tw0 –
Line up the zipper right sides together with the bottom corner of exterior scarf so that the zipper’s top edge is hanging over the bottom side seam of the scarf. Pin in place, and sew using a zipper foot, getting as close to the zipper teeth as possible when sewing, stopping where the zipper teeth stop at the bottom of the zipper.
When finished, fold zipper so that it is right side up on the outside of the scarf.
Step Three – Place the lining on top of the other side of the zipper, right sides together. Pin in place, and sew using a zipper foot using the same principles as stated in the previous step.
Step Four – Line up all sides of the scarf and pin around, leaving the zipper OPEN. Sew around all 4 sides. Start from the bottom of your sewn zipper line, make sure the zipper’s bottom edge is folded out and away from the seam, sew all around until you reach the other zipper end. Sew directly over the top of the zipper edge to the side seam.
Step Five – Trim corners and seam allowances. Turn right side out, pulling the scarf through the zipper opening. Push out all corners and seams with your fingers. Press.
Step Six – Measure a straight line along the bottom edge of your zipper and use chalk or a fabric pen to draw a straight line across. Pin and sew a straight line to create the pocket along the bottom edge of your scarf.
And you are finished!
Feel free to get creative with it. By putting the pocket along the back center of the scarf you can conceal heat packs to keep your neck warmer in the cold months ahead. Or even add another pocket to the opposite edge of the scarf for more pocket power. Make it yourself with this easy pocket scarf sewing tutorial.

Thank you so much Anne!
What a great idea Jess! Thank you for the tutorial.
Thanks so much!!!
Love the fabrics on the pocket scarf. Any help on locating where to purchase? Thanx
Of course Terrie – the sherpa is from my local Jo-Ann Fabric store. They are loaded up right now for the winter months on sherpa fabric, and other faux furs. The floral cotton is a super soft cotton…almost verging on flannel. I would balance it up with a pocket on the other side for a money purse. Terrific idea and I will be making one for the winter as I always use a scarf in UK then.
