I would have just about given my right arm for this hair tutorial when I was a little girl!!! Elisa from CharmingDoodle (and the founder of UpCraft Club) (and an incredible member of the Sewing Rabbit team!!), is here showing off how she makes Princess Leia hair buns with ONE SIMPLE trick! This is so cool.
Celebrating Star Wars week with galactic princess style…
How to style your hair like Princess Leia.
When I was growing up my brothers had all the Star Wars action figures and, of course, Princess Leia was included in the set. Her iconic hair was a big part of her look and I’m excited to show you a super easy tutorial for doing your girl’s hair just like Leia’s. All you need is one simple tool you probably already have in your home!
Princess Leia Hair Tutorial
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- 2 hair elastics
- 2 pipe cleaners (also called chenille stems)
- bobby pins
- brush and comb
HOW TO:
Step 1: Part the hair down the middle and make pigtails. Be sure that the pigtails are at the same height and placement on each side of the head.
Step 2: Have your daughter lay her head down so one pigtail can lay pretty flat on a table. (This helps keep the hair straight for the next steps.)
Step 3: Fold your pipe cleaner in half and place the ends of the hair in the fold.
Step 4: Slowly roll the hair up, like rolling a curler.
Step 5: Your daughter can now sit up. Put one of the loose pipe cleaner ends through the looped side of the folded pipe cleaner. Then twist the loose ends together so they stay in place.
Step 6: Tuck the ends of the pipe cleaner in carefully (they can be sharp – be careful) and you’ve made a circle. Spread out the hair around the circle then spray with hairspray if you want. You’re done!

Perfect! Needed this for my last-minute halloween costume ?
My 6 year old has bugged me to do ‘princess Leia’ hair for her for months but I could never deliver. This is going to return me to ‘worlds greatest mom’ status! Thank you 🙂
Super cute, love what you have done. Very clever!
So cool
Thank you for posting this as it looks great and the step by step directions are so helpful. Is there any easy way to take the hair out at the end of the day? We did a trial run tonight and her hair got pretty tangled in the pipecleaner. Thank you again!
