Looking for a fun clutch for date night? Try a fringe leather clutch! This little clutch purse is easy to sew, and a great beginner leather sewing project. Inspired by the anthropology fringe clutch, but for 10% of the cost. Not sure where to buy leather? Check out this post regarding fabric shops you oughta know. I mention my favorite little Etsy shop for leather in it.
How to sew a fringe leather clutch ::: Fringe Leather Clutch DIY.
- Leather (10″W x 14″L)
- Fat quarter of cotton fabric
- 9″ zipper
- binder clips
- coordinating thread
- rotary cutters
- leather sewing needle
Step One – Gather supplies as listed. Cut (2) 7″L x 10″W pieces of leather, and (3) 7″L x 10″W of cotton lining.
Step Two – Take (1) of your rectangles of leather, and cut it into 3 equal strips. Using your rotary cutters, cut slits in the bottom of the strips, leaving the top 1/2″ of the strip in tact.
Step Three – Sew the top strip of the fringed leather onto (1) of your cotton rectangles, starting from the bottom of the purse.
Step Four – Continue sewing the leather fringe onto the purse, slightly overlapping the previous strip, until you have sewn on all 3 strips.
Step Five – Lift the bottom layer of fringe up, and pin out of the way.
Step Six – Place the other leather rectangle right sides together with your fringe, matching up all side edges. Clip the bottom edge together and sew.
Step Seven – Place the last 2 cotton rectangles right sides together, pin the bottom long edge and sew – leaving a 5″ opening for turning later.
Step Eight – Place your zipper right sides together (teeth facing down) along the top edge of your leather fringe. Baste stitch in place, using a zipper foot when sewing.
Step Nine – Place the cotton lining directly over your leather fringe and zipper, right sides together. Pin the top edge in place, sandwiching the zipper in between. Sew using your zipper foot.
Step Ten – Press cotton lining side open, being careful not to iron the leather.
Step Eleven – Fold the other side of the leather up, right sides together with the opposite edge of the zipper. Pin in place, and repeat for lining – once again sandwiching the zipper in between. Sew.
Step Twelve – Unzip your zipper halfway. Place leather front and back right sides together, and lining front and back right sides together, with the zipper lining up in the middle. Pin sides and sew.
Step Thirteen – Pull purse right side out through the opening in the bottom lining of your bag. Press out all edges with your finger. Pin and whipstitch opening closed.
Step Fourteen – Push lining inside of purse, and you are finished!
