The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have stormed our house like a hurricane…and my kids are obsessed. Obsessed to the point of whispering into the neighborhood sewers to see if the TMNT are hiding out underneath our house. O-b-s-e-s-s-e-d.
I remember when I was younger, it was the Monkees, NKOTB, and Gem (she was truly outrageous). For my kids, its Donnie, Raph, Mikey, and Leo. And as a mother who loves her kids, I live to serve – lol. Needless to say, their reactions were absolutely PRICELESS when I surprised them with these handmade Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pillowcases. What good is a sewing gift, if you don’t bless your family with it after all.
These whimsical character pillowcases made my kids day, and their reaction to them made mine. Not to mention, they make for GREAT ninja pillow fights. Scroll to the end of the post for the cute pillow fight animated gif.
Teenage Mutant Ninka Turtle Pillowcase DIY.
- 1 yd green cotton fabric
- 1/4 yd red / purple / orange / or blue cotton fabric (depending on your ninja turtle of choice)
- Scrap white cotton fabric
- Heat ‘n bond
- Coordinating thread
- Basic sewing essentials
These instructions will make (1) standard size pillowcase.
Step One – Cut (1) 42″W x 31″L pillowcase pattern piece from the green cotton fabric.
Step Two – Cut (1) 42″W x 4.5″L eye mask pattern piece from your other color cotton fabric. Press long raw edges 1/4″ towards the wrong side and press.
Step Three – Iron on heat ‘n bond to the wrong side of your white cotton fabric scraps. Cut out (2) eye shapes. Fold the eye mask in half, and following the instructions on your heat ‘n bond, press the eyes to the center on one side of your halved eye mask (on the right side of the fabric). Unfold your eye mask, and sew around the raw edges of your eyes with a small zig zag stitch.
Step Four – Pin the eye mask to the right side of your pillowcase, 8″ down from the top. Sew around.
Step Five – Cut (1) 32″W x 4.5″L mask tie pattern piece from your other color cotton fabric. Fold mask tie in half, right sides together, matching up the long raw edges. Pin the long raw edge and sew using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Turn tube right side out and press. Fold raw side edges towards the wrong side and press. Sew closed.
Step Six – Fold mask tie in half and press. Match the folded edge of your mask tie with the raw edge of your eye mask on the side of the pillowcase. Pin in place and baste stitch to secure 1/8″ away from the edge.
Step Seven – Fold the bottom edge of your pillowcase 1/2″ towards the wrong side and press. Fold again 4″ towards the wrong side and press, enclosing the raw pillow edge hem. Sew using a straight stitch across to secure.
Step Eight – Fold pillow in half, matching up top and side edges, WRONG SIDES TOGETHER. Pin and sew top and side edge using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Trim seam allowance, and cut corner edge.
Step Nine – Turn pillow wrong side out, push out corners and press. Sew the top and side seam AGAIN, using a 1/2″ seam allowance. This will give you a nice french seam, without having to deal with finished seams or sergers. Easy peasy lemon squeeze.
Step Ten – Turn pillow right side out, push out all corners and press. Tie a small loose knot for the mask tie to complete the TMNT look.
You are finished!
And PS – they are perfect for pillow fights.
Ninja pillow fights of course.
