I made the Knot Tote free pattern years ago, with a quick hand-drawn pattern uploaded to Google…and was blown away by the response it received. More than 4 years later, I still receive e-mail requests from Home Ec and sewing teachers worldwide for permission to teach this quick and easy purse pattern tutorial to beginner seamstresses. I am honored, humbled, and thrilled to have made a sewing pattern that is so perfect for a beginner seamstress to learn how to sew. Especially a FREE one. (You can see the original post HERE).
That being said, I thought it was time to update this classic pattern. Moving it from outdated hand-drawn files to a more streamlined and digitized version.

*Please note – I kindly ask that you refer your friends to this page when wanting to share the pattern so that they can download the pattern directly!
Please do not e-mail the file directly. Why? Because you see those ads on the sidebar? That is how I get paid. ‘Pageview traffic’ & ‘affiliate links’ are part of my salary, and I appreciate every single person who visits my site! So thank you, thank you for being here and for downloading the free Knot Tote pattern, and for referring your friends to this site to do the same. It means the world to me, and helps the Sewing Rabbit continue to run :).
FABRIC SEEN IN THIS POST
Did you know Minted sells fabric now? Yeah…it is pretty amazing. The same artists that create beautiful designs for the cards and stationary we all know and love, are now making fabric. And it is all sorts of beautiful. Eye candy for the fabric lover. As of now, it is only home decor fabric. Which makes it great for purses, totes, pillows, and of course….home dec projects. Hopefully they will start to incorporate other fabric textiles in the future – because their designs are crazy awesome.
Fabric seen on the Knot Tote is ‘Always Positive, by Abby Munn’.
Here are some of my other faves:

PS – you are more than welcome to sell purses made by using this pattern. I would be absolutely delighted to know that I am helping a seamstress out there put food on her table in her handmade shop!
As always, thank you so much for stopping by and supporting the Sewing Rabbit.
Happy Sewing!
Hi,
I Downloaded this pattern (thank-you!). It says it is 12 pages…pages 7-12 are blank…is this an error? Should I download it again?
Thanks for your help 🙂
Please try downloading it again Kris. Perhaps there was a download error, which can happen. Pages 7 – 12 are the pattern itself. Thanks so much!
Thank you…I got it! 🙂
I had to download using internet explorer….
Awesome! Can’t wait to try. I didn’t have any issues downloading.
I downloaded the pattern and 7 -12 were blank and in reading the comments saw another have the same problem, so I downloaded again and the same thing on two different computers. Any thing else I can try? Love the pattern! Thank you!
I am looking into it Tina and will let you know. Have no idea why that is happening – the whole file prints out / looks just fine for me 🙁
I downloaded it on another computer and it all came through. Still won’t come through on the computer running windows 8 though. I have updated Adobe reader on both so I am not sure what the problem is!
Can I make this pattern and sell it in small quantities on Etsy?
Yep. I have Windows 8 and pages 7-12 are blank. Also updated Adobe reader recently.
If I make this bag and use bosal foam, or Pellon 71 foam, do you think it would be to bulkie to tie the knot? Thanks…
We are still looking into why it will not show up in preview form. But apparently – if you save it to your computer and open it from there, the pattern pieces will show up.
How have I never made one of these? I want to make one with Charlotte!
the problem has been fixed! Thank you so much! Please let me know if you have any other problems 🙂
Hi thank you for sharing this pattern, I look forward to making this unique style of bag. I had no problems downloading the pattern.
Our quilt guild has quilters who only know how to sew quilts. I would like to teach this bag so they can learn some sewing basics besides sewing mostly straight lines. I plan to do repeated demos while they are cutting out their fabric. I will request that they go to your blog to download the pattern before the meeting. May I have permission to do so?
Phyllis of Acacia Quilt Guild of Orange County, CA
Phyllis – you have no idea how happy that makes me!! You 100% have my permission, and I sincerely hope they like making the bag 🙂 . Thank you so much, and have a great day!
I made this today and it is very small. It is more a childs tote, than an adult tote. I could not download on this site, but I did copy the previous pattern. I spent all my day doing it and it didn’t work. Very disappointed, to say the least.
O.k. So I showed my husband my failed attempt, and he told me how to ” save target as a P.D.F. file” and then I opened it in Adobe. So I was at fault. I will do it again, in some cotton fabric. Thank you. Every time I clicked the download above, it just opened in a browser window, which didn’t print correctly. I guess this will be my practice round. One of my grandchildren will use it, I suppose. My biggest problem was the opening. I guess I can laugh at myself about it now.
Thank you for the free pattern. I teach quilting/sewing to two little girls once a week after school. They are making a Quilt of Valor to give to a relative. I promised them that when they finished the quilt top we would take a break and make something just for them. This is perfect for two 7th graders. Thank you.
