STYLO Magazine, Issue 4 is all about COLOR. Bright, bold, beautiful color. Colors reminiscent of Summer, of holding hands on the dock while watching the sunset. Of that first bite of watermelon as the juice drips down your chin, and color that reminds you of the smile on your child’s face as they hear the ice cream truck coming down the street on that first hot day. Everything about STYLO4 screams Summer, with a high fructose color pallet.
Which is why I chose to make a WHITE dress. One of the most debated questions regarding color is over black and white. Are they, or are they not, ‘colors’? I tend to believe that white IS a color. If color is light, then white would be the brightest color of them all. And I kind of love that.

This marks the official first ‘sneak peek’ of Five and Ten Designs book number 3, which we have been working on behind the scenes for the past few months now. The white dress seen in these photos was one of the first versions ever sewn, and also my very first time working with this funky mesh fabric. I saw it, and HAD TO HAVE IT. You know how it goes with us fabric lovers. It just looked so dang cool. The fabric worked a lot like a neoprene, very thick with a lot of full body. For this reason, I chose to use fold over elastic at the neckline to reduce bulk.
Pattern alterations in these photos that differ from the Volume 3 eBook being released in a few weeks: the dress is shorter than our final Volume 3 pattern, as the thicker mesh/neoprene-like fabric needed to be folded over quite a bit before I could hem it properly. Also, because I used the fold over elastic neckline, the neckline stretched a bit when sewing. Not intentional, but still cute. A rookie mistake on my part really. I would recommend cutting the fold over elastic 1.5″ shorter than the neck opening, and stretching the elastic while sewing – so that it lies flat against the body. (Fold over elastic is not offered as a pattern alteration in the eBook, because…well, why would it be? Lol). Lastly, there is no back button and loop opening on this dress, as I was working with a stretch fabric. In the Five and Ten Designs Volume 3 eBook, the classic dress version will have a back neckline opening.
Overall, this dress will be a perfect Summer dress for going to the beach, going boating, going to the pool, or just running around in the backyard. Which is really what Summer is all about for us. The best part? Maddy loves it.

Great photos!
I’ll have to try FOE on neoprene!
LOVE the simplicity of this dress. White may well be the perfect colour for it. I think I NEED to make one of them.
I remember seeing this white dress and first thought into my mind is – whoever made this definitely knows how to catch audience’s eyes. Love the idea that white is the brightest of all bright.
