This past weekend we had a charity auction that we attended, black tie optional. I always jump at the opportunity to dress up with my husband, it makes me feel young, alive, and SEXY again. To go out on the town, for one night, and leave all of my ‘Mommy attire’ behind. I was all set, with the perfect dress to wear and everything, until the day of the event.
At about noon I got an e-mail. Apparently the event was GATSBY THEMED.
Eek! Somehow I had missed that crucial information in the planning stages. And now I had 6 hours to go, and needed to make a decision…fast. Naturally, any normal person would have said – ehh, I will wear what I was going to wear anyway. Or rather, gone through their closet and found an old bridesmaid dress that sort of fit the theme and ran with it. But I am not normal, I am a seamstress. Ha!
Instead, I laughed maniacally and screamed something along the lines of, ‘Gatsby? You are going to have to try harder than that!‘ And immediately set to work.

I googled ‘Gatsby Fashion’, looking for ideas that would work with fabric I already had on hand. The concept couldn’t be too complex as I had a limited amount of time to work, which is when I stumbled across this photo. It was perfect! Susan of Crafterhours had gifted me with some black sequin fabric for a Christmas swap last year that was still sitting on my shelf. And the knit skirt fabric was purchased from Michael Levine Fabrics around the holidays, for a dress I had in mind that never came to fruition. The style was easy enough, and I was on my way.

- Shoes – had on hand (a $5 Ross purchase that I have worn over, and over, and over again!! Gotta love that.)
The entire look took me less than 2 hours to make, and I cannot even begin to tell you the number of compliments I received that night. Let alone the jaw dropping when my husband would proudly proclaim that I whipped it up that afternoon for the event. It was A-W-E-S-O-M-E.
Not only that, but we had a great time at the event and raised loads of money for a great charity. My husband even bid on something…and WON. Woot woot! Changing lives, 1 person at a time.
And PS – thank you so so so so so much for all of the Instagram love you guys left me on this photo. I had my husband snap a few on my iPhone just before stepping into the doors for the event. And this is what we got (all of the photos in today’s post were taken on my phone!!!). After sharing the one photo on IG, you guys were so kind! Talk about making a girl feel good. Love you all.
Thanks so much for stopping by, and until next time…
