Have you ever considered on making a rug? Well I’ve been bouncing this idea on my mind for a couple of months now and I just couldn’t shake it of. I’ve been eying some super cute animal outline rugs from all over the great Internet (these being the cutest I’ve seen) and thought it would be cool to share a template for a rabbit with you guys, since Easter is coming fast and all.
This is a super easy project and you can use so many different materials for it, I’ve used faux fur from my local fabric shop but I think it would work great with industrial felt too, just to give you an example. I’ve included 3 sizes on the template for you to choose from – small, medium and large; I chose the large size for the girls room and they are loving it lots!
No Sew Rabbit Rug – DIY.
MATERIALS:
- Faux Fur or other material of your choice.
- Download Rabbit Rug Template HERE.
- X-Acto knife.
- Tailors chalk or your preferred tracing tool.
- Cutting mat.
HOW TO:
Step 1 – Print and tape your template pages matching all the markings and numbers, just like a regular PDF sewing pattern. I like to fold the margins rather than cutting. Cut the size you want to make.
Step 2 – Place your template on the wrong side of your faux fur, and place some weights on top so that it doesn’t shift while you’re tracing.
Step 3 – Carefully trace the template on the faux fur with the chalk or marker.
Step 4 – Place your fabric on your cutting mat and use your X-Acto knife to carefully cut through the fabric. Don’t make much pressure so that you don’t cut through the fur just the first layers.
Note: If your faux fur starts to fray (mine doesn’t) you might want to use something like Fray Check to prevent it from happening when you finish cutting.
And you’re done!
Ha Easy peasy right? And the best part is that you can make so many different versions. How cute would it be to make a door mat with the small template to welcome your guests during Easter Holidays?!!
Thanks so much for stopping by, and until next time…
Happy Sewing!

Hahah Mie, this is so easy, you can even let them do it by themselves (just let them cut with scissors instead of the x-acto knife). 🙂 And thanks for all the love. xxx

Oh wow! So happy that you liked it Anne! It’s an honor to be featured on Craft Gossip. Thank you so much!
Hi
I’d love to make the large rabbit mat for my little boy but before I printed out the pattern I was just wondering how much material you used so I can estimate how much it would cost to make up.
Thanks for your help. Xxx
Hi Jo, so glad you liked this idea. To know that you’re thinking of making one makes me really really happy!
The large rug is approximately 45.25x55in (115x140cm). I’ve bought a square with about 59x59in (150x150cm) but you’d be ok with a piece of 50x59in (130x150cm).
You can find the finished measurements for the 3 sizes of the rug on the second page of the template. 😉 If you have any other questions please let me know. xxx
Ines this is soooo cute and such a wonderful idea! And your kids room is adorable. You are amazing!
Thank you so much my dear! You are too kind. <3 So happy you liked it. 🙂
Thank you so much for replying so quickly and so sorry I didn’t see the measurements. I’m really looking forward to giving it a go. X
No problem at all Jo, I’m here to reply to all your doubts. 🙂 Hope you have fun! Apart from taping the template it’s a pretty quick project. 🙂
Hi! I love this rug! So cute and easy, even just for Easter! One question… Any idea how I could get a template for a different animal?
Hi Michele, so glad you liked it. I did this template using Autocad (a drawing software most commonly used for architecture and design, don’t know if you have heard of it) but you can for instance use this free font in a big size (http://www.dafont.com/animals.font) and print it in a shop that provides large-format printing services. Hope this helps. 😉
Thank you!
I like this. i hope to make it for my daughter.
Thanks Sammy. I hope you do give it a try! 🙂
Okay I was hooked, one of the cutes things I have seen on pinterest for Easter and then 37 pages to print out, seriously?
if you want it the actual size of a mid-large size rug, then 37 pages is about right. But that being said, you can certainly free-style it with a pen and not print ANY paper out :). Thanks!
How adorable! A rug like that wouldn’t last in my house for ten minutes with my dogs…but I wish it would. Love it!
I was so impressed with this rabbit rug. One of the few classy Easter items I have seen per my own opinion. So I just took the black bunny and put it on word and printed the page out. I had a very difficult time trying to put the print out together. From there I went to Staples to get an engineer print. The gal was nice and worked with it and finally I got the size. It was on the middle size print and it was $3.88. Then I went to JoAnn’s and got the fabric for $2.50 I think she made a mistake but she knew and let me have it for that. Then I cut them out with an exacto knife. Mine are probably the small size. I really didn’t need the big size, but maybe would have done medium if I could have figured out the instructions. Anyway maybe just me and the 37 pages thingie. Anyway I love how they turned out. I did one backwards and so they are kissing. Then an extra out as I got three out of my fabric. Thank you so much for sharing your idea.
so happy it worked out for you! Sounds adorable 🙂

Hi Diane, thank you so much for sharing your version, looks adorable. And thank you for all your feedback, I’ve improved the template and added a printing and assembly instructions section so if you ever feel like making it again it will be much easier. 😉 Really sorry you had so much trouble but I hope you’re happy with the end result. 🙂
I can not find where I can download the free pattern.
This is so very cute and I hope I can make one before next Sunday.
Hi Lori, so happy you liked it and want to make one. To get the pattern you have to click on the second item of the materiais list (on the beggining of the tutorial) where it says “Download Rabbit Rug template HERE”. Hope you have fun.

Never mind…I found it – noticed the tip in one of the other comments. Did not notice that it was actually a hyperlink.
