The great thing about Bohemian decor is it can be thrifty and fun, while not breaking the bank. I have always been a fan of this artsy decor style, and decided to put a little bit more fun and flair into my home this Winter. By adding in pops of color to offset the otherwise grey and cold weather outside, my mood is instantly brightened by these warm and fun pillows. They also make great Valentine’s Day decor, without being too ‘girly’ or ‘heart’ themed.
You don’t need to have an anthropologie budget, to match your Bohemian decor style.
Painted Bohemian Tassel Pillow DIY.
Sewing Level: Beginner
MATERIALS:
- (4) Embroidery Floss
- (1) yd Cotton -or- Twill Fabric
- Fabric Paint / Paintbrush
- Poly-Fil (not shown)
- Basic Sewing Essentials
HOW TO:
Step One: Gather supplies as needed.
Step Two: Cut (2) Square Shapes your desired pillow size + 1″ for seam allowance.
Step Three: Place tin foil or wax paper underneath your (2) pillow squares. Place your fabric paint in a red solo cup, or other plastic container that you don’t mind cleaning paint out of. Add a dab of water and mix. Using a paint brush, paint the bottom of your pillows until you like the desired outcome. Allow to dry fully.
*Optional – You may want to wash the pillow squares after the paint is fully dry, for a ‘softer’ feeling pillow. If you do wash, finish the edges of all of your pillows before hand with either a zig zag stitch or serger around all 4 sides.
Step Four: Unroll the embroidery floss a little bit, and cut off a piece of thread. My piece of thread is approximately 3-4 times the length of the skein.
Step Five: Fold the embroidery floss in half, letting the folded ends meet at the bottom.
Step Six: With half of the excess cut off thread from earlier, tie a tight knot around the top center of your floss leaving the ends dangling.
Step Seven: About 1/2″ down from the top knot, take the last piece of excess embroidery thread and tie around the top of your tassel, bunching all of the thread together. Wrap the thread around nice and tight 5 or 6 times, and then tie ends together in a knot.
Step Eight: Cut open the bottom of the tassel threads.
Step Nine: Trim tassel so that it is nice and even.
Repeat (4) times.
Step Ten: Place the tassels about 1″ away from the corners of (1) of your pillow squares, with the ends dangling out. Pin in place, and baste stitch over the tassel ends to secure in place. Trim off excess tassel threads.
Step Eleven: Place (2) pillow squares right sides together, pin around, securing the tassels in the middle. Sew, leaving a 5″ opening along the bottom edge for turning.
Step Twelve: Turn right side out, pushing out all corner edges with your finger. Press.
Step Thirteen: Stuff pillow with Polyfil, pin opening closed and whipstitch to secure.
And you are finished!

This pillow is awesome. I have to try this. Is that mouline string?
Yes! just plain and basic mouline thread. I love working with it!
