As much as I love a good shift dress, sometimes its nice to sew a more modern sewing pattern with a fit that flatters. A sewing pattern that will make you feel like a million bucks. So I looked around and found some that I think would do exactly that. Sewing patterns that flatter WOMEN.
And just for giggles, here are some of the other post titles / direction I thought of using for this post:
- 10 sewing patterns your butt will thank you for
- 10 sewing patterns that will make people stop and say, oh my goodness – you have children?!
- 10 sewing patterns that will get you ID’d when trying to buy beer
- 10 sewing patterns that will make you want to break out the 80s music
Ok, I kid…mostly. But here is the more thoughtful title.
10 Modern Sewing Patterns that Flatter WOMEN.
1. Delia Creates Pencil Skirt
When asking some friends about sewing patterns they love, one of the first names off their lips is the Delia Creates Pencil Skirt. This skirt seems to flatter all shapes and sizes of women, and we love it! What’s more, Delia offers about a million different ways to alter it on her blog. Its a staple you should definitely have in your collection. And PS – this skirt is easy enough for a beginner!
2. Vena Cava Vogue Pattern V1258
What a great dress! It cinches in all the right places, has fabulous modern cap sleeves, and a gorgeous neckline. I love this, and hope to try it in time for Summer! Wouldn’t it look phenomenal bouncing around town with some sunglasses?!
3. Shwin & Shwin Carol Tee
What I love about this pattern, is that its so much more than just a basic T-Shirt. It has style. With the front slit neckline that shows a contrast lining ever so slightly, a flattering cap sleeve, and that awesome optional triangle. THAT TRIANGLE. Talk about genius. The point upwards leads eyes to your face, and the bottom hides belly bulge. It is perfection, in a T Shirt.
4. BurdaStyle Wrap Dress with Sash 10/2011
Designer Wrap Dress BurdaStyle
Talk about a stunning dress, with a classic silhouette. I am sure I don’t know a single woman that wouldn’t look absolutely fabulous in this dress. And I swear by BurdaStyle patterns, they always fit me great! Just beware, there are no seam allowances included on Burda Patterns. But for things like that, I use THIS trick by You and Mie. This pattern is totally on my sewing wish list.
5. Deer and Doe Anémone Skirt
Need a little extra hip action in your life, or want hips that lie like Shakira’s? Try making this skirt! It pulls you in at the waist, and then flares out at the hips for the perfect hourglass figure shape. It’s the new modern peplum look, with a twist, and I think its fantastic! Picture it with a nice clean, crisp white button down and the perfect statement necklace…and you just owned that boardroom.
6. Kate & Rose Giselle Dress
If I had just looked at this pattern front on Kate & Rose, I might have passed it over. But when I saw what Oona did with it, I was hooked! Did somebody say floral Bohemian Maxi Dress…with a true fitting top and waist? YES PLEASE! Dang, I am so in love with this pattern. It flows in the wind, while still making you feel like a sexy Momma. Heaven in a pattern. Must make before Spring.
7. PatternReview Winter Street Dress
When I saw this dress on the Curvy Sewing Collective, I was floored. I mean – doesn’t Jenny look incredible!?! If that doesn’t sell the dress pattern, I don’t know what would. Just wow. You know, if you like the ‘DANG I LOOK GOOD’ look.
8. Closet Case Patterns Bombshell Swimsuit
As if you haven’t seen enough Bombshell swimming suit patterns floating around the web by now. You know it looks good on everyone!!! Just make sure you have an awesome fedora to sport with it like Heather here. Fedoras make everything better.
9. Closet Case Patterns Ginger Skinny Jeans
Truth – I don’t know anybody who has sewn this pattern….yet. But I think it looks awesome, and would be willing to give it a go when time frees up! I currently swear by one store brand of jeans (Express) – and almost never shop anywhere else for them. I wait patiently for sales to roll around, and then I snatch up a few pairs at once. Which is why it would be a blast to see if I can actually make my own. I love that these Ginger Jeans offer the different waist options (low and high). And the flattering fit looks to hug in all the right places.
10. Kay Unger Vogue Patterns V1329
Granted, Mimi G Style has a way of making everything look good. But this dress truly would flatter if you have the right amount of spanx to wear with it! The color blocking is genius, and I love the way it gathers at the waist to hide any extra ‘bulge’. Definitely something to try…if you have moxie like Mimi.
And there you have it! 10 sewing patterns that flatter WOMEN.
Tell me – which patterns am I missing?
Do you have a favorite that you want to share with us? Or perhaps just one you have had your eye on? I would love to hear about them!
Thanks so much for stopping by, and until next time…
Happy Sewing!
thanks for the great list! I need to make that vogue dress stat!
i’ve made 2 Ginger’s already and it is absolutely fantastic…in fact…I am wearing it right now.
I am loving Sew Liberated’s School House Tunic…. I make it into a blouse, a long dress, a tunic even! Flatters all sizes and shapes and very easy sew. It’s my go-to pattern right now!
So cute- I think I’ll try the schoolhouse tunic! I’m always wearing leggings, so this is perfect. Thanks!
I love Vogue 1250 for summer; I have made it up several times and have lengthened it into a maxi dress too. Bonus it’s easy to sew and doesn’t use up too much fabric. Flatters several figure types. I think someone even added sleeves for a winter version.
I just finished sewing up a pair of Ginger Jeans and they are FANTASTIC! Heather has done it again with another very flattering pattern for any body type- I highly recommend!
Simplicity 2444. Perfect dress pattern for any pattern fabric

Hi Jess,
This is a great article. My favourite, most flattering pattern is the Essential Denim Dress. It’s got plenty of shape but skims over all the right places. The diagonals are always flattering too.
Here’s the link: http://www.sewdifferent.co.uk/the-essential-denim-dress-free-pattern-lc013/
It’s one of my own patterns and is free to download from Sew Different.

I love your collection here. As a curvy 50 year old woman I am always looking for trendy but flattering comfortable clothing patterns to sew my own cause we all know you cant buy that in a store. Your collection here fit the bill perfectly. I love the Ginger skinny leg pattern by Closet Case for its choice of waist lines.
Keep up the good work!
Where can I find the bathing suit pattern? I am interested in making it!
Tried and True Pattern, the Lady Skater Dress. Haven’t made it yet but have a black one just like it in my closet that I am wearing out. Perfect for short waisted curvy older figure
Your list is great! I too have that school house tunic. It looks great. And I also love Delia Creates. Isn’t that Carrie Cardigan wonderful. So I guess I’m going to have to check out her pencil skirt pattern for my daughter and grandaughter. And I am thoroughly intrigued by that tee shirt pattern on your list. But I still would love to know if that sweatshirt top that you had on in one of your pictures is a pattern that you designed. I really, really want to make it. It’s a sweatshirt type of top, but the sleeves are gathered about half-way down the arm and then pulled in around the cuff. Oh, please tell me you know which one I’m talking about. Is there a pattern for it? I fell in love with it the first time I saw you wearing it. I know, a 69 year young woman should probably maintain her dignity, but not when it comes to that top. I get so tired of looking at the same old sweatshirt all the time. I hope you can help me. I wrote you once before about it, but I never heard anything. Pleeeeez? Thanks for humoring me. I’m just a dotty old lady. Have a great holiday season and surround yourself with people you love and love you, and as many giggles and smiles you can fit in. Cheryl
