Sweater Tulle Dress DIY.
- Sweater that fits well (not tight)
- 4 yards of apparel (lightweight) tulle
- 1 yard of knit fabric
- 1 yard ¼” elastic (not shown)
- Basic Sewing Essentials
Step One: Using the bottom of your sweater as a guide, cut (2) skirt panels the width of your sweater + seam allowance. Arc out at the sides, until you reach your desired length. Make sure the stretch in your knit goes from left to right, and add at least 1.5” for seam allowance to the length.
Place skirt panels right sides together, and pin side seams. Sew and press seams open. Hem by turning ½” towards the wrong side, pressing and sewing.
Pin the top folded edge together, and sew a gathering stitch. Pull the bobbin threads gathering the tulle until the panel is about 20% larger than the knit skirt when wrapped around.
Cut the tulle hem to your desired length.
Pin the gathered tulle edge around the top of your knit skirt (remember, the tulle skirt panel is larger than your knit skirt), matching up the side edges of the tulle with the back center of your skirt.
Sew tulle onto the skirt using a zig zag stitch, 1” BELOW your knit skirt waistline, stretching the skirt as you sew to match the tulle width.
Trim tulle seam allowance.
Step Three: Cut a piece of ¼” elastic the same width as the bottom of your sweater, + 1”. Overlap ends of elastic ½” and sew together. Slip elastic over the top edge of your knit skirt and pin in place.
Sew using a zig zag stitch all around, stretching the elastic as you sew to match your skirt width.
Sew around using a zig zag stitch, directly on top of the elastic, slightly stretching as you sew.
For added girly embellishments, just add a bow :). I used silver glitter elastic – which also makes for great elastic hair bands to accessorize with.
PS – love the bubble look of the tulle skirt in my photos? Simply turn the hem of the tulle under, and pin. Then hand sew in place with larger stitches all around. Enjoy!
