1 month ago I was talking with a friend when she suddenly whispered something to me, and ushered me into her home. Turns out she had this crazy idea for sports team slipcovers on all of her barstools. Could I make them for her, in time for Christmas??! Obviously, the perfect present for her hubby.
As a seamstress, you know. This is just the beginning.
Christmas rolls around and suddenly everyone has a great idea for a handmade / custom / embroidered gift. I know, I have them too! I have grand ideas and schemes for the absolute perfect gift for almost everyone on my list. The problem? I actually want to ENJOY my holidays. Not spend the entire month locked away in my studio. As Christmas draws near, and life activities increase, most of my handmade gift ideas get tossed out the window.
So here is a fun little guide to help you through the holiday season. How to avoid the handmade Christmas blues.
A Seamstress Holiday Survival Guide.
And just to clarify….It’s not that I don’t want to help out my friends. And my guess is you feel the same way, we all want to be kind and giving and loving towards those around us. It’s just that most non-sewers are rather clueless as to what their request entails.
They don’t see the big picture. Not the amount of hours working on the project (shopping for fabric, measuring and cutting, sewing, ironing, etc.), which also equals the amount of hours spent away from my family. Not the money for the cost of supplies (let alone an hourly wage), nor the fact that I need to pay a babysitter to watch my kids. Because most Mom don’t get ‘free’ time. Ever. (That’s my favorite BTW…the ‘in your spare time’ line. Psh – in my spare time I will be watching Black List, thank you very much – ha!)
I have to believe that if they knew that. If they knew what they were asking, what it entails, then they would think again. And if it is still truly worth it to them…then it might be worth it to me at THAT point. Knowing the true price of what they are asking. Its not monetary.
As for my friend and her bar stools. I said yes. But when I told her she needed to be responsible for getting me the right fabric because I know squat about sports teams, she declined.
People aren’t trying to be rude. They are just clueless. So in the meantime…
