With every new year, I try to come up with ideas for how I want to update the blog. I brainstorm for weeks on end, thinking of ways to improve, or change directions. I strive to keep things fresh and current, while not letting posts get stale here at the Sewing Rabbit. It is not only fun for the reader (I believe), but it helps ME continue to have fun doing what I am doing. Because after all, how boooooring would it be if it was always the same old. Yuk.
There are so many sewing bloggers out there, which is awesome. So many people to learn from!!! But to try to do things different? Well, that takes skill. That takes personality, talent, and being your awesomely unique self.
I wanted to take a moment to recognize the sewing bloggers who I believe truly BLAZED TRAILS in 2014. Who took 2014, owned it and made it their year to shine. To applaud them, and say WELL DONE friends. I asked some friends who came to mind when they thought of 2014 Game Changers, and here is what we came up with.
10 Sewing Bloggers who Rocked 2014.
Its no secret that I am a huge fan of Dana’s from MADE, she takes the art of blogging about sewing to the next level. But that has always been par for the course with her. But THIS year….this year she blew us all away when she released her YouTube TV Show, Made Every Day. It is off the hook, with professional camera men, lighting, trailers, and of course – her sparkling personality taking center stage. Dana – 2014 was your year! Congrats Momma.
Andrea defied all odds when she made the dreaded name change from The Train to Crazy to Andrea’s Notebook earlier this year, and she has literally been THE BOSS of social media ever since. Recognize one of these graphics like the photo above? It was probably Andrea’s, and you probably pinned like a million of them throughout the year. The train to who? Sorry, I only know Andrea’s Notebook. With the hundred’s of thousands of other followers she gained this year. Congratulations Andrea, you are a Social Media goddess!!! 2014 was totally your year hun.
If I am going to put something of my own on this list, it would be STYLO. The on-line kids sewing magazine that everyone seems to love, and (from what I hear) aspires to be included in. Together with Celina Bailey of Petit à Petit, we put together a labor of love every 4 months to birth this incredible compilation of sewing blogger awesomeness in one magazine. I believe, and I am definitely biased, that it raises the sewing bar each and every issue. Because it is just THAT good. Thank you Celina, for allowing me to partner with you on such an incredible magazine. I am truly lucky. It was our year with Stylo.
Sewing Like Mad. Where do I begin with someone whom I hold so near and dear to my heart like Mie?! I feel like I have watched Mie completely bloom and SOAR, as she came into her own this year in the sewing blogger world. She has emerged as an impeccable seamstress and designer, known for her European taste and trends, and as a woman who can teach professional proper technique to those willing to listen and learn. I adored her Industry Insiders Series, as it focused on people who might not be well known within the blogging world – but are so very respected and knowledgable at what they do. And I felt like it summed up what Mie is all about. She is someone who KNOWS her stuff, and has such a valuable skill to offer sewing readers. Well done Mie – you truly SHONE in 2014.
Lauren of Pattern Workshop made waves this year when she released her on-line sewing pattern class: from sketch to sale. Women signed up in droves to take her on-line class, and I feel like it was all I heard people talking about within my circles for months. But she made TSUNAMIS when she signed up to teach for Burdastyle. Her classes sold out, and they had to resign her up to teach another class. Because you know what? People WANT to learn, and Lauren is a great teacher. Well done Lauren – you totally BROUGHT IT in 2014, and helped so many people in the process.
Hayley of Welcome to the Mouse House has been pretty well known for a few years now. In fact, don’t know who we know better – her daughter who is famously in all of her fabulous photos, or Hayley herself! But either way, we love them both. THIS year Hayley made all sewing bloggers shine when she appeared in the reality TV Show Stitch Masters and made it into the Final Three! And I happen to know for a fact that she started her own clothing line this year, as well as another top secret project, that will both be released in 2015. Sing it with me – this girl is on FIRE! 2014 was hers for the taking.
In the words of Kim Kardashian, the ladies behind Spit up and Stilettos broke the sewing internet when they suddenly offered all of their professional patterns for FREE. I think it was a sample sale free-for-all when people got wind, and their site was flooded with people requesting the downloads. It was the FB share heard around the sewing world, and brought their name onto the tips of people’s tongues in a big way. A genius marketing move, and one I hugely congratulate. Well done Alyssa & Lauren – talk about making a splash in 2014!
Jennifer Cooper of Classic Play is well known for her incredible videos and crafts, but she took a leap into the unknown this year when her and her husband released South of Brooklyn. A website that shines a lights and tells the stories of the makers, artists, and entrepreneurs that inspire us. It is so interesting, and well done, that I simply want to stand up on my cheer and scream Bravo! Encore! Encore! So although Jennifer might not be a ‘sewing blogger’ per say, she is doing something so incredible, being a beacon for artists everywhere. Jennifer – you totally amaze and inspire me. Cheers to a most amazing 2014!
Alexia Sotelo of Lexi Made was the name on everyone’s lips this year. They simply NEEDED her for their pattern testing / pattern tour / sewing series / pattern design / photography skills. Alexia has talent in spades, and we all stood up and took notice. But what made her truly STAND OUT this year was when she made the incredibly difficult decision to QUIT BLOGGING. Say what?!! I am pretty sure the sewing blogging world made a collective *gasp* at that moment. With someone at the top of their game, to make that decision must have been so tough. But I applaud her for following her heart and making the tough call. She is a hero in my book. Alexia my friend, 2014 was your year. And I am so proud of you!!!
What happens when 5 well known designers come together to create their own fabric company? MAGIC. To say the Cotton + Steel fabric line was a success, is a massive understatement. It was all I heard people talking about for a few solid months! C+S, C+S, C+S…everywhere I turned. Their fabric was gorgeous, and we all wanted it. Melody Miller, Rashida Coleman-Hale, Alexia Abegg, Sarah Watts, Kim Kight….you made the fabric dream team in 2014! Congrats ladies!
And there you have it. Ten incredible sewing bloggers that ROCKED 2014.
I don’t know about you, but I cannot wait to see what they do next. Isn’t it fun when we can come together as a community and celebrate each other’s achievements?
TELL ME: Who had YOU on the edge of your seat this past year? And who do you think will OWN 2015?
Thanks so much for stopping by, and until next time…
