I’m excited to share with you a tutorial for this super simple side button sweater I made for my daughter. This is probably the easiest garment you could ever make, but it turns out so cute and comfy! Everyone will want to know where you bought this boutique looking top, and your daughter will love just how comfy she is wearing it. In fact, you might love it so much that you will end up making on in your own size! Let me show you how to make it.
Side Button Sweater DIY.
WHAT YOU NEED:
- knit fabric
- 6 buttons
- sewing machine
HOW TO:
- Grap your knit fabric and cut out your pattern pieces. You are basically cutting out 3 rectangles. You will want to cut out a neckline as well as slant the shoulders slightly as shown in the image below. I measured my daughter from elbow to elbow as a guide for how wide I wanted the rectangle to be and then measured her from shoulder to the bottom of her hip as a guide for how long I wanted the rectangle to be. This sweater is meant to be wide and boxy so it is very forgiving when it comes to drafting the pattern pieces. For the neck piece you will want to measure around the neckline you just cut and then cut the rectangle neck piece the same width.
- Now you will want to take the front and back pieces and with RST sew them at the shoulders. Then you will want to hem the sides as well as the bottom by folding under once and then folding under again. Take your neck piece and fold in half RST so that the two short ends are even with each other and sew.
- Now fold the neck piece in half with WST so you now have a ring that will attach to the neckline of your sweater to form the cowl neck. With RST sew in place. Now you will take your 6 buttons and sew 3 on each side of your sweater like shown below.
- That’s it!! SO quick and simple with such a cute end result! You could even make an adult version for yourself. It’s the perfect cozy sweater for fall. I’ll leave you with some photos of my daughter in her new side button sweater.
I hope I have inspired you to get out your sewing machines this week!
Happy sewing!
i really miss your posts alexia. so glad you still have to post here:) your photos are so amazing!
Thanks Christina! 🙂
What a chic outfit…I’d like it for myself!
Thank you!n I want to make one for me too!
This is adorable. Might just make one for my mini miss today. I’m so happy you still post here. Miss your blog!
Thank you so much!
I love this!!! I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for a while! Thanks for the tute! 🙂
You are welcome 🙂 Glad you like it!
Love this! Thinking of making one for my daughter out of an adult top or sweater. Just wondering, how could I make it cover better, while still looking as cool and stylish? I can see that your daughter isn’t wearing a long top under, and I imagine being able to see my daughter’s entire torso through those armholes. I imagine I’d have to make the top button a whole lot higher, but I don’t know if it would still look stylish, or weird. I’m leery of experimenting as I just don’t have a good imagination for this sort of thing. Any advice greatly appreciated! Thanks so much for sharing this gorgeous top with us!
My daughter is wearing a black cami underneath. A long sleeve shirt underneath would be cute too. 🙂
So do love it thanks for the pattern
Thank you! And you are welcome. 🙂
Alexia, your side-button sweater is so stinkin cute! And your pics are amazing. Guessing that little girl is yours? What a doll!
Please tell me where you got your black and white knit. Seems like the only kind I’ve found and collected are pastels, but the b/w steps it up a notch on the fashion scale.
Anxious to make this for my granddaughters. Thanks so much!
Thank you! And yes, that is one of my twin daughters. 🙂 I got this knit from the fabric district in LA. Wanderlust fabrics and Girl Charlee have some great selections in knits. I would give them a try. 🙂
I love this top that you made for your daughter. .
I was trying to understand how to measure the neckline do i actually measure from the side down into the scoop & to the other side and the back neck piece as well??? Really want to make this for my granddaughter. … thank you
This is my question as well. Is the neckline a percentage of the elbow-to-elbow measure? I want to make sure the cowl neck will go over the head.
love this. wish there was an actual pattern or video tutorial.
I really miss your presence online Alexia. I made my daughter one of these and I love it. She actually wore it yesterday. 🙂
So cute…..j’adore
Super love the easy tutorial….thank you for sharing…will make one for myself .
your daughter is so cute!!!
I just love this, and I want to make one? But… Can you tell me what RST and WST means? I am new at sewing, and don’t even know the Norwegian abbreviations.. Thanks ?
RST = right sides together
WST = wrong sides together
This is SOOOO gorgeous. If I can find some time I believe I would like one for myself! Thanks
used your idea and made a poncho out of it.
The cowl width is the measurement around neckline plus seam. But about how long did you make it?
12″ maybe? Which would be about 6″ after folding in half and attaching to bodice.
Hi! I really love this button tunic! I’m new to sewing and don’t know if I just missed it but, how did you measure the height of the rectangle for the neckline?
Thanks again for posting this tutorial though!
I would like a more detailed description on the mesurements for the cowel neck
This is a terrific top! I can’t wait to try one.
My questions is: did you make button holes for those buttons? Could you sew the seams together and use the buttons decoratively?
Wow!!! Just finished my adult version of this Sweater and I am sooooo in Love with it – the perfect start for sewing in 2016. It was so quick and easy and is unbeliebably cool, I just know this will be my favourite item to wear the next months. Thank you so much for the Tutorial! And my daughter will get a striped knit version just like your cute girl – she looks so beautiful on your pictures!
Liebe Gruesse,
Jutta
Adorable!! 😀 Can you share where her leggings are from? (or a link to a tutorial if you made them :))
I understand that the actual cowl width is the measurement of the hole cut for the neckline, but how did you measure the neckline? Just want to make sure the top can go over the head.
I’ve just made one of these and I just used a t-shirt that fit my daughter now to make the pattern for the neck. Just lay it on top of the fabric and you’ll get a rough guide. I might post it to my Instagram with the #mesewcrazy
These are so stinkin’ cute! I can’t wait to make some for me and my little sis! x
