Hello Sewing Rabbit readers! Today I want to share with you two of my latest creations I have made using the amazing Five and Ten Designs – Volume Two pattern block.
Jackets and outerwear are probably my most favorite thing to sew, so once I saw the new Volume Two release I knew I had to get my hands on it! It was time to sew a jacket…or two or three.
I rarely sew for my son anymore, so I knew I wanted to make him a new coat that will work for fall and carry him into winter. I have had some camo fabric laying around since summer and decided I would scratch the camo shorts idea that I had originally planned and use it for a jacket instead. I didn’t care for how bright the fabric was so I decided to bleach it to give it a faded distressed look. It took two bottles of bleach and hours of waiting but finally the stubborn fabric faded just enough for my liking.
I used Look No. 4 to make my jacket and almost followed the directions exactly. The only thing I changed up was replacing the hood with a collar. I used the collar pattern piece and added just a little length to the ends. I love this jacket and so does my son. He has been asking for something camo for months now and he finally got it!
I scored this super great quality faux fur at the fabric district while I was in Los Angeles last week, and decided to make a fur vest with it. It is so soft and I just love the colors in it. To make this vest, I basically sewed up the basic pattern block without the sleeves. The vest is lined but I omitted the zipper guard. In order to help the zipper not get caught in the fur when zipping it up and down, I did add a piece of leather just wide enough to cover the zipper teeth in-between the zipper and the fur.
Pattern & Fabric Used:
I am so in love with this vest and I will definitely be making one for ME next! I love how many different options are already created for you with jacket pattern block in the eBook, and how easy it is to customize the basic pattern block to make practically any coat or outerwear piece you want. I love how I used the exact same pattern to make two totally different looks.
The fit was spot on for both of my kids and I know I will be using this pattern to make many more garments in the future! If you haven’t purchased Volume Two yet you need to! I was not disappointed at all. Here are a few more photos of my kiddos in their new coat and vest.
I hope you have enjoyed my looks and hopefully I have inspired you to start creating your own versions of some awesome outerwear for your kids! So go ahead, sew a jacket this Fall / Winter Season.
