In the words of one of my favorite shows (Monty Python)….. “And now for something completely different!”
I suppose in the realm of sewing for kids there’s bound to be an interest in sewing toys! Dolls and doll clothes are very popular, softies are super cute, and I hope this tutorial and pattern will be of interest to you because my kids LOOOOOVE puppets!
I started to draft up a tutorial and pattern for a frog and thought “Wait a tick…… if this is going on the Sewing Rabbit website I need to make a RABBIT!!!”
To download the entire pattern and tutorial in a quick print format CLICK HERE! And if you’re interested in the frog you can stop over at my blog to download similar instructions and patterns for the frog. I’ll be making 25 frogs for a music teacher conference this year!
And now, ladies and gentlemen…. “It’s time to play the music! It’s time to light the lights! And now let’s get things started on the Sewing Rabbit tonight!”
What you’ll need:
- Printable pattern pieces
- White minky fabric (or fleece, felt, etc.) for the body
- Felt scraps for mouth, tongue, eyes, and ears
- Googly eyes, pom for nose, wire for whiskers (optional….you can be creative and use whatever you like to make your puppet face!)
- Sewing machine, thread, scissors, pins
Get started by printing out the pattern pieces and assembling as pictured. Cut out each pattern piece according to the description.
To complete the puppet, use craft materials to create the face! I also cut cardboard the shape of the mouth and glued it on the inside so that the puppet mouth was easy to manipulate. I also added a small amount of poly-fill stuffing to the top to give the head a little more body.
And as your very final step, let your child name the puppet and create the puppet voice!!! Christian named our Sewing Rabbit Boxer! He has quite the attitude!

Awesome puppet, great easy to follow pattern! Thanks for sharing my princess puppets!
That’s awesome! Kids love puppets!!! I remember when my daughter was little I could get her to do chores if I had the puppet ask instead of me asking. hahaha!!!
I’ve got a Craft Gossip post scheduled for tomorrow evening that links to your tutorial:
