Hi there, Alexia from the Sewing Rabbit team! I recently took a trip to my hometown in California and while I was there I went to the fabric district and scored this awesome sequin fabric. It’s slightly stretchy and doesn’t even need a lining. I knew it would be perfect for a sparkly jacket!
To make this jacket I used a universal needle and Simplicity pattern 1430 that I snagged for $1 at a recent sale at Joann’s. The only thing I changed from the pattern is I omitted the fold over collar/lapel and made the jacket more of a cardigan style. I also cropped the sleeves a little higher. This jacket would be so simple to make using a loose t-shirt or cardigan as a guide. Or you can use any cardigan pattern that you happen to have on file. Just make sure it isn’t too loose fitting!

Your pattern pieces should look similar like the image above.
Even though the sequin fabric I used didn’t need to be lined I decided to line it anyway. To line your jacket just simply cut all your pattern pieces in your lining fabric just like you did your sequin fabric. For the front pieces I basically sliced it in half and cut one half in the lining fabric and the other in the sequin fabric like the illustration below:
Now attach the front pieces with the back piece at the shoulders for your sequin fabric. You will do the same with your lining fabric once you have attach the lining and sequin lining fabric together. Then attach the sleeves to both the lining fabric and the main sequin fabric. Now with right sides together you will attach the lining jacket and the main jacket and sew all the way around the whole jacket. Pull the jacket right side out through one of the sleeves. Hem your sleeves to your desired length and you are done! Soooo easy but such a fun piece to add to your closet!
I think my favorite part about sewing is styling what I have made with things I already have in my closet. Here are four different ways you can style a sequin jacket:
1. Pair it with a simple white shirt and some boyfriend jeans
I think the looser fit and the distressed style of these jeans help make the jacket a little more casual and fun to wear anytime of the day!
2. Sequins and leather
Glam your jacket up a bit with a fun pair of leather leggings or maybe a leather pencil skirt and some heels! This would be a fun date night outfit.
3. Pair it with a graphic tee
I think sequins with a graphic tee and some distressed skinny jeans is the perfect rocker chic look!
4. Pair it with a little black dress
You can’t go wrong with sequins, heels and a little black dress. I think it’s the perfect amount of classy and edgy.
Now go get yourself some sequin fabric and make yourself a fun new jacket to add to your closet! And of course have fun styling it!
Thanks so much for stopping by, and until next time…
Happy Sewing!

Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! Now if it could just cool off a little bit so I can wear it.
I am making one of this for my little girl she will love it!
Yes!! Thanks for this! I just found some amazing gold sequin fabric at a fab price and have been stewing over what to do with it…this is perfect!!
Just loved it! Easy and pratical!
I just moved away from LA and the one thing I am going to miss most is the fabric district down town. I was in heaven when I was there. I bought so many nice fabrics for the home and clothes! I would always bargain down the price when i bought lots of yardage. Something you can not do in stores. But love your jacket and the lining.
I have never used sequin fabric – do you have to remove the sequins from the seam allowance?
I didn’t remove any sequins. I think it would depend on how large they are. The sequins I used are pretty small so it wasn’t an issue.
words cannot describe how in love I am with this! my second favorite color (leopard is my first – haha) is sparkle by way of sequins – of course!!! amazing!! Love this!!
