We have all heard the rumors…sewing swimsuits is easy. If you can sew with knit fabric, you can sew a swimsuit. You don’t need a serger to sew a swimsuit. etc. etc. etc. It took me 2 years, from when I first started thinking about it to now, to finally screw up the nerve to sew a swimsuit. The rumors are true.
Sewing a swimsuit IS easy.
When Suzanne of Sew Pony but a call out on Facebook saying she had 1 spot left on her Cosi Swimsuit Tour, I randomly reached out and said I would do it. She accepted, and I proceeded to freak out. Not only had I agreed to sew a swimsuit, but I agreed to do it in public on a tour. Agh!
Luckily I was traveling in Los Angeles last month, so I knew I would have fantastic swimsuit fabric to select from at Michael Levine. While shopping with Justine of Sew Country Chick, she helped me pick out a fun yellow and white stripe, paired with a pretty floral. I knew they would be perfect to mix and match the swimwear patterns for my girls.
The Cosi Swimsuit has up to 7 options for sewing. That’s right, I can make this swimsuit SEVEN times and get a different result each time. I made ‘View D’ for Madeline…
And View G for Chloe…
I believe swimsuits for kids should still be FUN. I hate seeing kids in swimwear meant for adults. I felt like this was the perfect separates option, the high waisted shorts kept it vintage, fun and friendly. While still being a little bit more grown up to suit her growing taste. I love it.
Furthermore, I was able to fully line the suits which my kids LOVED. They hate it when sand collects in the ‘sand pocket’ as they call it. And by fully lining the suits I was able to eliminate this problem for when we go to the beach.
NO SERGER WAS USED IN THE MAKING OF THESE SWIMSUITS.
I was visiting my family in New York when I decided to sew these up (hence the fancy cabana photoshoot at the hotel where my brother works), and sewed these bathing suits up entirely on my mother’s sewing machine. By simply using a stretch stitch – they came out GREAT.
I loved sewing these swimsuits. I was sure to measure my kids as per the Cosi Swimsuit pattern instructions, and the result in fit was fantastic. Chloe has already asked me for another one, a one piece this time. I think View B will work perfect, and just in time for our trip to Florida next month! After all, it is always awesome to see your kids having fun in something handmade…
