After finding myself sewing in my skivvies one too many times trying to fit patterns onto my body – I decided it was time to invest in a dress form. I ran out and bought a low end adjustable bust model from my local fabric store. I have hated it ever since. It may get the job done, but it sits in the corner of my sewing space – which happens to be in the middle of our living area – like a giant green sore thumb. I just want to hide it away somewhere, which is a terrible feeling because I typically love everything about my sewing space. I love displaying the pretty fabrics, taking care of my sewing machine, and keeping my latest sewing creation on the dress form for days as I make tweaks to the design. But there was nothing pretty about this form, nothing that made me want to keep it on display. Furthermore, the form had an awful habit of wobbling every time I was trying to pin things on, the adjustable knobs were tricky, and the pin holder continuously flew off when I tried to take pins out. I was not a happy camper.
Why couldn’t I get something lovely and functionable? Something that adds to the beauty of my sewing space, not takes away. Something I could use to help take pretty photos of my creations on, that would enhance the visual appeal of my work. Something that would actually WORK.
Which is why I was thrilled when The Shop Company contacted me to review one of their products.
Professional Women’s Dress Form
*Please note – the Shop Company provided me with the dress form for review. All opinions are 100% my own. Thank you.
I chose the Professional Women’s Dress Form, it had everything I was looking for in my new model. It had the sturdy base, a pinnable body, the pretty canvas form, and most of all – it had measurement curves that matched up pretty well with my own. Shhh….I was a size 10. Furthermore, it had a cool skirt cage attachment which I had never worked with before. I was so excited to try it out!
The box was waiting for me upon my return from Alt Summit, and it actually took me by surprise – it was big! But after opening it up, it was actually incredibly easy to put together. All I had to do was snap the form onto the base, hook the petal in, and I was good to go. And as you can already see, it is bea-uuuuu-tiful. I am already envisioning a little family of dress forms in my new sewing room for our new house – lol.
But here are all of the fun surprises that I found out about the dress form after I received it.
- The adjustable petal – you mean I can simply step on the petal and the form will move up and down in height?! No more fiddling with the knobs and all of the twisting and untwisting??! Yesssssssss.
- The canvas form – this form is gorgeous. As you can see from the pictures, I already have a kids form which I have used and swear by for years. But this form puts that one to shame. The seams alone are stunning!
- The metal base – not only is it sturdy, but it is also on wheels – which allows for super easy mobility as I transfer the form from one spot to another. Loving that.
- Skirt cage – this was by far my biggest shocker. I didn’t know if I would like that feature to tell you the truth. I don’t like it, I LOVE it!!! My skirts fit right to it, and I can easily see size and fit of any dress or skirt. It is FANTASTIC! And of course it is removable, so it snaps right off I want to make pants.
It is so fun to be able to drape your latest fabric obsession right onto your form, and play around with it. Pinning the fabric directly to the form as you create the desired shape of your dress. This form is only ‘partially pinnable’, which means the pins have to go at an angle – versus just sticking them right through. Which doesn’t bother me, but might be an issue for others (they sell other forms which are ‘fully pinnable’ – see below). There is also no place for me to easily stick my pins, like my old form had on the head which kept falling off. But I imagine I can easily make a removable pin cushion for the upper head area if I find I need one.
All in all, I LOVE this dress form. It functions like a dream, and is gorgeous to boot. Furthermore, the cost is actually rather reasonable at only $195. For anyone who has researched good dress forms can tell you, that is a GREAT deal. But even so, the Dress Company offers a great selection in forms ranging in price to choose from.
So you can find the right dress form for you, that fits your budget.
The difference between the Professional versions and the non-Professional versions are primarily measurements. The professional versions are meant to be used for all of our sewing needs. Whereas the non-professional versions are meant for visual appeal – photoshoots, store design, etc. #1 & 2 above are non-professional, #3 & 4 are professional.
