Today I have a fun video showing you how to make a leather fringe necklace, using an old bead necklace you already have on hand and some scrap leather, as part of the What Would Celina Do Series.
We all have people in our lives that are SO AWESOME, you constantly find yourself wondering how they might tackle a project, looking to them for inspiration, or calling them up to ask for advice. One of those people for me is Celina Bailey. Author of Petit a Petit & Family, 2013 Sewing Rabbit Team Member, and my partner in crime for STYLO Magazine, Celina is a total rock star and everyone knows it. I had the pleasure of working with her on a daily basis as part of the team last year, and she never ceased to amaze me with every little thing she did! She is one of the most innovative people I know, with a true eye for fashion and design, and she is literally turning the sewing blog world on its ear. So when I was asked to be a part of the ‘What Would Celina Do?’ Series, I simply had to get on board.
The best part? She has NO IDEA that this Series is going on today, it is a total surprise to her. I cannot wait to hear her reaction. She is gonna cry, I know it.
So without further ado, I give you…
How to Make a Leather Fringe and Bead Necklace
First off, Celina always starts with a few really Pinterest worthy images. Portrait, with fabulous colors and typography. I kept mine simple this time around, but the very first image is usually the one pinned most. Did you know orange and pink colors get repinned 80% more than other colors on Pinterest? I learned that from Celina herself in the Pinterest Class at ALT Summit. So naturally, I made an orange necklace to test that theory.
Now, onto the project. I would like to say that Celina is always on the cutting edge of fashion, knowing what is trendy or fashionable. But the truth is, she simply marches to the beat of her own drum. She knows what she likes and doesn’t like – and we all just happen to think it is fabulous. She has a knack for mixing vintage with current trends, with just a touch of whimsical fun, in such a way that makes you need to see more.
The leather fringe and bead necklace is easy to make, requiring some scrap leather, an old bead necklace, scissors, an Xacto knife, and some glue. With leather jewelry being on trend, I wanted to give some old bead necklaces of mine that don’t see any more action a face lift. Turning them into a trendy, statement necklace that can be made in under 15 minutes.
Here is what you will need:
- Scrap Leather
- Bead Necklace
- Pen
- Scissors
- Xacto Knife
- Gorilla Glue -or- Hot Glue
The How-to, Celina Style:
Here is where Celina usually kicks it up a notch. She loves to go above and beyond the simple tutorial. She typically does this in one of three ways: She creates an awesome modern graphics tutorial, she creates a modern graphics VIDEO tutorial, or she makes 10 of the same product to truly make for fabulous photos in multiples. She has also been known to employ watercolor images, 3D style graphic photos, animated gifs, magazines, and more. I chose 3 of these tactics to use for my post.
- Video Tutorial
- Made in Multiple Colors
- Animated Gif
Shall we?
Less-than-2-minute Video Tutorial…
Made in Multiple Colors…
She loves to make things in multiples, with her specialty being to use all of the colors of the rainbow. These make for fabulous Pinterest worthy photos – which her over 3 million Pinterest followers love.
Animated Gif…
And lastly rounding it out with an animated gif showing different ways it can be styled.
Because Celina is just awesome like that.
