Craft Book Month with Craft Buds…Blank Slate Basics

Craft Buds is hosting a fantastic Book Month this September featuring nothing but Craft Books!  When Lindsay asked if I wanted to be a part of it, I automatically said yes. You see, I have an addiction when it comes to Craft Books. I just can’t seem to help myself! The collection I am growing has gotten a little bit ridiculous to tell you the truth, but there is just something about the pretty pictures, the story they tell, and the bits of information I glean from each one – I just love them! A few of my favorites are Shelly Figueroa & Karen LePage’s Sewing for Boys, Meg McElwee’s Growing Up Sew Liberated, and Oliver & S. Little Things to Sew.

So when my friend Melissa of Melly Sews released her brand new pattern book Blank Slate Basics, I was super excited to try it out!

It had so many wonderful items to choose from, all for sizes 18 months to 8 years.  I didn’t even know where to begin, there was just so much to see!

I eventually landed on the Prepster Pullover.

After all, I had just received my brand new stash of Sarah Jane’s Out to Sea fabric, and it was pretty much burning a hole in my stash…

All of the little details were fantastic, and Melly did a great job of explaining her sewing techniques. She even taught me a new way to handle button plackets, which I particularly loved. It was probably the easiest I have ever seen it explained in any sewing pattern out there! I will definitely be keeping that tidbit of information handy for future use.

I erred slightly when cutting my pattern (slip of the rotary cutter), so my collar is a bit different then initially intended.  But I still think it came out cute!

Blank Slate Basics is just overflowing with goodness, and I will definitely be referencing to it again and again…

Be sure to hop on over to Melly’s new site Blank Slate Patterns found HERE to check out everything this pattern book has to offer! I have it on good authority that the blazer is rockin.

Thanks so much for having me on the Tour Lindsay, and be sure to check out the rest of the Blog Hop over at Craft Buds…

Back-to-school season means its time to hit the books. Craft books, that is! We love craft books for their inspiration, stunning photography and crisp, glossy pages. Hard covers or soft, we just love craft books, and we know you do, too!

All month long in September, our friends at Craft Buds will celebrate sewing, quilting and all kinds of craft books by shining the spotlight on new releases, interviewing authors and editors who make the magic happen and giving you a chance to win.

Link up your craft book project at Craft Buds from Sept 23-30 from your blog or Flickr account, and enter to win prizes. Winners will be announced on Monday, October, 1!

To participate in the month-long contest, just link up any project you’ve made from a pattern in a craft book. That easy! You’ll tell us a little about the book, the project, how you personalized it, etc.

Rules:

1) One entry per person.
2) Your craft book project must have been completed in 2012.
3) Create a new blog post or Flickr photo (dated September 1, 2012 or later) and link back to Craft Buds/Craft Book Month in your post or photo description.

No time to create a project? This month, just follow Craft Buds and comment to win some new craft books and lots of giveaways! We’ll also have expert Q-and-As to show you what it takes to write a craft book, from the initial idea to the layout, photography and the actual printed product.

To help kick off the Craft Book Month contest in style, Fat Quarter Shop is helping us celebrate with a big giveaway! One winner will take home a $100 gift certificate to shop for some new fabric, craft books and notions.

Ten winners will get a new craft book to help work out that creativity! This is the perfect excuse to make that project you’ve had your eye one, but haven’t carved out the time for.

Fat Quarter Shop is giving away 1 copy each of Quilts from the House of Tula Pink by Tula Pink, Sewing ModKid Style by Patty Young, Skip the Borders by Julie Herman, Stop Go Quilt Sew by Angela Yosten and Sunday Morning Quilts by Amanda Jean Nyberg and Cheryl Arkison.

Craft Buds is giving away 1 copy each of Modern Basics by Amy Ellis, Reinvention by Maya Donenfeld, We Make Dolls! by Jenny Doh, New Dimensions in Bead and Wire Jewelry by Margot Potter and More Teach Yourself VISUALLY Jewelry Making by Chris Franchetti Michaels.

Fill out the Rafflecopter form below for your chance to win! The kickoff giveaway ends Wednesday, 9/5 at 11:59 ET, when we’ll randomly choose 11 winners. Good luck!

Love, love, love the shirt in that fabric!!!! Great job. I haven’t done one in a non-traditional boy print yet, but seeing your version I think I have to try one now.

(I’m pretty sure you probably showed this before and my age is showing today when I say I don’t recall seeing it before. PLEASE just don’t tell me yes. I am not ready to admit I’m losing my mind yet. LOL)

I’ve been thinking about getting Blank Slate Basics to add to my meager collection of boys patterns (I have Sewing For Boys, which I love, but that’s it!) and I’ve been hearing so many great things about it. This shirt turned out so cute I think it may be the final push I needed!

I don’t own nearly enough craft books but out of the ones i have i really like the Doodle Stitching ones by aimee ray, i really like adding that little touch of cuteness to things and whenever i’m at a loss at what to embroider it’s nice having her motif collection nearby.

I look for items that I haven’t seen before… like boys clothes that would fit my boys (size 8) which is getting harder to find, and quilts that are bright colors and fairly beginner friendly. Thanks for a chance to win! 🙂
Your shirt is cute! I was a pattern tester for that one, and it is a great boys shirt! 🙂

Another craft book addict here. You made the perfect choice and that’s such a great fabric for it. It’s so cute, I can’t wait to get sewing from these patterns – the blazer is first on my list but I think the pullover won’t be far behind.

I still need to get the blank slate basics – it has just fallen to the wayside for the moment (lets just say many many unexpected expenses in our household have cut ‘fun money’ down to zilch). The blazer is what makes me want the collection SOOOOOOOO badly!!!
