Back to Basics – A Line Skirt

With time being a bit harder to come by lately, I thought it would be good to do a small Back to Sewing Basics Series. This way I can still get my sewing mojo on, fulfilling my own personal need to create, just in the smaller amount of time allotted to do it!

I am not reinventing the wheel here with tutorials, as everything I will be sewing during this Series has already been covered again, and again, and again in blog-land. But I will show you what I have made, as well as direct you to some of the awesome tutorials out there for these basics!

We’ll start today with the classic A-Line skirt…

A-Line’s are great because they have beautiful results, with minimum time required. I whipped this beauty up in under an hour – and it only took me that long because I had to readjust the length after I made it too long the first time around!

These photos were taken on our first family outing after we brought the baby home, at around 1 week. Chloe was a little…ahem…testy.

My awesome Aunt (yes, she really is AWESOME!!!) sent me a small stash of some incredible trim she had stumbled across a while back. While looking at it one sleep deprived night, I knew I wanted to make a skirt utilizing some of it! The A-Line is perfect for this, as the sheer simplicity of the skirt allows you to showcase the trim fabulously!

If you are a beginner to sewing clothes, I highly recommend starting with the A-Line. It is easy to figure out, with its clear and simple lines. And with the minimum input of time and fabric required, even if you do mess up, you don’t want to bang your head against the wall. (Trust me, been there and I hate that!!! When you mess up and all you can think about is all the precious time you just wasted – let alone fabric!).

Thanks to my new love Pinterest, I was able to compile a small list of A-Line Skirts that you might want to check out…

You are right, that trim is just right for the simplicity of the skirt and gives it a lift from ordinary to wonderful!

Great list! Does an A-line skirt have to be short or can I make it ankle length?

All you need is a paper clip to turn your mask into a bracelet, when you don’t need to use it but are still out and about. I wrote a blog post to show how easy it is. And even came up with another idea that is, dare I say it, even EASIER than this 🤪👊🏻. Link in bio - and thank you!
