So, you loved my Liberty of London sweatshirt. I know! I do too. With 1 yard of the floral fabric left over, and burning a hole in my stash, I simply couldn’t let it just sit there. After all, that fabric cost a pretty penny, I want to enjoy this gorgeous textile…not let it collect dust on my shelf. Then I thought, why shouldn’t my daughters enjoy it too? With Mother’s Day around the corner, I thought it would be fun to sew up some adorable matching mother daughter shorts.

Print out pattern pages and piece together as instructed. Cut out desired size. Cut out pattern pieces as instructed.
Step 1 – Place your (2) Front pieces right sides together, pin and sew crotch seam. Repeat for (2) Back pieces. Finish seams as desired.
Step 2 – Place Front and Back shorts right sides together. Pin and sew side seams and inner leg. Finish seams.
Step 3 – Fold the hem towards the wrong side 1/2″ and press. Fold again 1/2″ and press. Pin in place and sew to hem. Repeat for both legs.
Step 4 – In the Front Waistband seam, sew (2) buttonholes at marking.
Step 5 – Place Front and Back waistband right sides together. Pin and sew side seam. Fold waistband down in half, with the wrong sides together, matching up the bottom raw edge.
Step 6 – **See next step if elastic is desired before completing this step. Slip the waistband around the top of the shorts, right sides together (the buttonholes should be touching the front center of the shorts), matching up the raw edges and side seams. Pin around the upper edge, and sew using a zig zag stitch or serger.
Step 7 – *Optional – if elastic is desired, leave a 2″ opening when sewing the waistband. Slip elastic inside the waistband at this point, then finish sewing waistband. Elastic length should be your waist measurement minus 2 – 3″. Slip elastic inside waistband using a safety pin, pull elastic all the way around, and sew elastic ends together to secure. Then finish sewing the waistband opening closed.
Step 8 – Slip twill ribbon through buttonholes using a safety pin, bringing it all the way around the waistband. Cut ribbon to desired length, and tie knots in the ends of the ribbon to secure.
And you are finished!
Thanks so much for stopping by, until next time…
